Social Competency in Education Abroad

Education Abroad

The number of WSU students who participate in Education Abroad programs increases each year with approximately 700 students enrolled in faculty led and contract programs in 2006-2007. As WSU has made globalization, diversity, and cultural competency a primary goal for current and future areas of study, this number is expected to grow. For a national perspective on the growth of education abroad programs see the Open Doors Network website.

Students on bridge
Most education abroad experiences for WSU students are highly beneficial and free of unhealthy or harmful situations. However, there have been recent & high-profile incidences within study abroad programs nationally - including crime, violence, accidents, and substance use. This has created the impetus at U.S. universities, including WSU, to address student health and wellbeing while abroad, student responsibilities and legal concerns, student behavior, student conduct policy and other interrelated factors.

We are dedicated to providing first-rate information and resources to educate our students and the public about health, wellbeing, and harm reduction while abroad. Through this we provide a safe and healthy academic environment and support the WSU mission to enhance the intellectual, creative, and practical abilities of the individuals, institutions and communities that we serve by fostering learning and inquiry in all their forms.

Until recently data did not exist to easily answer this question, but new research demonstrates that this is not the case.
